During the MLS half-day transfer window, Minnesota United sent their third round pick in the upcoming SuperDraft to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for defender Joe Greenspan.

Greenspan was born in New Jersey and played his collegiate soccer for the Navy Midshipmen. He was named an All-American both his junior and senior years, making him the most decorated player in the history of Navy soccer.

The Rapids selected Greenspan in the second round of the 2015 SuperDraft with the 26th overall pick. He has appeared for the Rapids first team four times, scoring on his debut in an Open Cup match.

In addition to being a professional soccer player, Joe Greenspan is also a Navy officer who was serving on a Navy destroyer at the beginning of the 2016 MLS season. According to his Twitter profile, he is currently in the reserves.

Greenspan is still only 24, meaning he has a long career ahead of him and plenty of time to grow as a player. It is also important to note that he stands at a towering 6’6”, which should help to deal with even the burliest of MLS forwards.

United now have a grand total of three players on our roster, all of them defenders. The Expansion Draft is coming up in just two days, after which we should have a few more players. Our roster for the 2017 is finally beginning to take shape, slowly but surely.

What do you think of the trade? Who else does United need to add to our roster before opening day? Leave us your thoughts in the comments below
