It may have been one of the worst kept secrets ever, but Darwin Quintero is now Minnesota United’s first-ever designated player.

The Colombian attacker arrived in Minneapolis from Club America on Wednesday night, where he was warmly welcomed by a collection of fans and media members who were made well aware of his “alleged” flight.

“Darwin makes this club better,” said MNUFC Sporting Director Manny Lagos in a press release. “As we continue to grow and develop our roster and build on our core pieces from last year, we have just added an explosive player who can change the game in an instant. He raises the level of the team in terms of attacking movement and opportunity.”

Quintero met with teammates on Thursday before training on Friday. Manager Adrian Heath conditionally spoke about his first impressions after the practice session. “[He is] exciting,” the gaffer praised. “We’re really looking forward to getting him on the field.”

Loons fans won’t be able to see him on the pitch for Saturday’s match against Atlanta United though. Quintero’s visa and ITC are still pending.

Quintero will be formally introduced to fans at the Midway Target on Tuesday, April 3rd from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. There will be a meet-and-greet and autograph availability.
