Today U.S. Under 23 Men’s National Team head coach Jason Kreis named Minnesota United forward Mason Toye and Midfielder Hassani Dotson to the team’s 24 man roster for a friendly against Japan on September 9th.
Following MNUFC’s match against LAFC this Sunday both players will join the U-23 National Team in Chula Vista, CA for training at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center. With this callup both players will more than likely miss the friendly against Pachuca on September 7th in St. Paul.
Since the Gold Cup break Mason Toye has really found his own, scoring his first pro goal against Houston in the Open Cup and his first MLS goal in the Loons 7-1 thrashing of FC Cincinnati. Since the FC Cincinnati match at the end of June, Toye has scored four more times, including the match winner against Portland that sent MNUFC to the US Open Cup Finals.
Dotson on the other hand has been a utility player at times for the Loons, checking in at left and right back as well as central midfielder. Hassani has logged 17 appearances with 11 starts and 1,036 minutes played for Minnesota United in 2019.
This is the first match heading towards the Qualifying process for the 2020 Olympics. The US U-23 team has not qualified for an Olympics since 2008, and the 2020 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship will be held March 20 – April 1 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Two teams from the Qualifying Tournament will head to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. The match on September 9th will take place in Chula Vista, CA.
