Minnesota United FC made a splash this morning, one that the #FreeChacón fans might be happy or entirely displeased with. The Loons have loaned out the 20 year old young Designated Player for the 2021 season. Thomás Chacón will head back to his native Uruguay on a full season loan deal to play for Primera División side Liverpool Fútbol Club. Following the end of the 2021 season Liverpool will have an option to buy Chacón from MNUFC.
Chacón came up through Danubio Fútbol Club’s system and would see his first Primera División action for the side in 2017. Through parts of three seasons of sporadically appearing with Danubio’s senior squad he would make 20 appearances between 2017 and 2019.
Hope was large for the youngster when MNUFC purchased him in August of 2019 from Danubio. However since joining the Loons he only made six appearances for Minnesota, five in MLS Regular Season play and one in the Group Stage of the MLS Is Back Tournament. For most of his time in Minnesota however Chacón has typically not been named to the Matchday squad.
MNUFC Head Coach Adrian Heath had this to say about Chacón’s playing time and loan,
“We felt that given Thomas has been with us two seasons and has had limited playing time, that it was imperative he go and play some football, that’s the most important thing,”
The question now remains on whether or not he will return to Minnesota for 2022 as Liverpool does have an option to purchase, however Heath seems optomistic about Chacón returning to the North Star State saying,
“We’re hoping it’s a really successful loan spell for him and when he comes back, he’s ready to make an impact for us on the field.”
