‘Mingo Monday: Madison reschedules game vs North Texas due to Jacob Blake shooting

In line with many other teams and league around North America, Forward Madison did not play this week.

This is going to be a very short edition of ‘Mingo Monday, as Forward Madison rescheduled their game against North Texas SC from this past weekend. The full press release is below.

Forward Madison FC and the United Soccer League announced Thursday morning that the club’s upcoming match, scheduled for Sunday, August 30th at 4 p.m. against North Texas SC has been postponed. In light of the painful events occurring in our home state and around the nation, the decision was made in collaboration with our players and Black supporters group, the Featherstone Flamingos, in putting the spotlight entirely on the fight against racial injustice and systemic oppression.

Last Sunday, we watched the appalling video of a Black man in Wisconsin, Jacob Blake, shot seven times in the back by a police officer. We have said that Black Lives Matter. Our players have protested during games. When there is still no change, we must do more.

That’s why we are postponing Sunday’s game: To shift attention away from sports and towards the fight against systemic discrimination towards Black Americans. We demand that our state and national leaders take action to address these inequalities, and we encourage our fans to responsibly and peacefully pressure their elected officials for change.

Sunday’s match will be rescheduled for a future date. Fans who had tickets to the game may transfer them to the new date or exchange them for any other regular season match.

We completely support Forward Madison’s decision to postpone the match for a later date in regard of what has happened in Kenosha this past week. You can also read our Letter from the Editor here.

North Texas SC also made a small statement on the matter as well.

North Texas SC respects and supports Forward Madison’s decision to postpone Sunday’s match in Milwaukee, WI. We join them in pausing to reflect on the events and racial injustice affecting our communities across the country.

The United Soccer League (who runs USL League One) also made a statement on the postponing of the match.

The United Soccer League announced Thursday that Forward Madison FC’s upcoming match, scheduled for Sunday, August 30th at 4 p.m. CT against North Texas SC, has been postponed. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, Madison is playing its 2020 home matches in Milwaukee, just 45 minutes north of Kenosha, where the tragic shooting of Jacob Blake occurred this past Sunday.

It’s with pain, frustration, and hope for a brighter future, that the league fully supports the club, its players, supporters, and community as a whole in putting aside soccer in order to shine a spotlight on the fight against racial injustice and systemic oppression.

A rescheduled date for the match will be announced in the coming days.

All five of the other matches scheduled for play since Wednesday night in USL League One were played, so the standings have changed slightly since last Monday. South Georgia was able to jump Forward Madison by getting a single point this past week. Outside of that the top 5 haven’t changed. The bottom half saw Chattanooga jump from 9th to 6th place on the back of three points this past week. With that change all five teams at the bottom of the standings are official “B” teams of clubs. Fort Lauderdale CF (Inter Miami) is the best of the bunch, then it’s the only non-MLS owned “B” team in FC Tucson (USLC’s Phoenix Rising). Then the bottom of the table it North Texas SC (FC Dallas), Orlando City B (Orlando City), and New England Revolution II (NE Revolution). However Revs II did record their first ever win in Week 7 so now everyone is on the board in the win column.

USL League One Standings after Week 7

Forward Madison FC will be back in action this Friday night against against USL League One expansion side, New England Revolution II at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA. You can catch the match on TVW in the Madison, WI area and on ESPN+. Stay with E Pluribus Loonum all season long for ‘Mingo Mondays each and every week.
