The first week of college soccer is in the books and the standings, in one form or another, are already starting to take shape. Here are some of the highlights from the first week.
Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference
The NSIC started last week with mostly non-conference games but with a few NSIC matchups as well. Six schools (Bemidji State, Mary, Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota State, Northern State, and St. Cloud State) currently sit unbeaten overall, with only the SCSU Huskies have played more than one match. On the flip side, five schools (Augustana, Minnesota-Crookston, MSU Moorhead, Southwest Minnesota State, and Upper Iowa) sit winless and all have played multiple matches. Nationally the Minnesota State Mavericks have moved from #19 to #10 in the most recent poll. Here are the Standings with matches played through 9/6/17.

The NSIC also announced it’s first set of Players of the Week for 2017. Natalie St. Martin (Minnesota-Duluth) was named the Offensive Player of the Week. She played a part in all three goals, with two assists and the game winning goal for the Bulldogs against Wisconsin-Parkside.

The Defensive Player of the Week is Maria Witte (St. Cloud State). Witte led the defensive effort that produced 2 consecutive clean sheets against Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech. Witte also provided an assist on the Huskies third goal against Northern Michigan. Hannah Smith (U-Mary) was named the Goalkeeper of the Week, after she allowed one goal against Minot State on 10 shots on net and 3 corner kicks!
Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
D3 soccer also started in the MIAC last week with a plethora of non-conference games. The top half of the MIAC Men’s standings has six schools with undefeated records with only St. John’s having played a single game. Three schools (Bethel, Concordia College, and St. Olaf) are winless through the first week. On the women’s side of the MIAC, only three schools (Carleton, St. Benedict, and St. Thomas) are unbeaten while only St. Catherine is winless after the first week. Nationally, no women’s programs are ranked, while St. Thomas sits at #3 in the most recent men’s poll. Here are the Standings with matches played through 9/6/17.

The MIAC announced its first Soccer Athletes of the Week for 2017. Matt Bateman (Gustavus Adolphus) was named the Men’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. The Gustavus goalkeeper recorded 2 clean sheets to start the season, including a two save shutout over UW-Superior and a four save shutout over St. Scholastica.
Megan Thompson (St. Benedict) was selected by the MIAC as the Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week. Thompson scored four of the five goals for CSB in their match against Nebraska Wesleyan in her first ever collegiate match!
Upper Midwest Athletic Conference
Just like the MIAC, the UMAC started with a bundle of non-conference games. After one week, no programs remain unbeaten and a number of teams remain winless. Nationally, no schools are ranked in the most recent polls. Here are the Standings with matches played through 9/6/17.

The UMAC announced it’s first Soccer Players of the Week for 2017. Danny Kearns (UW-Superior) was named as the Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. Kearns scored 3 goals and had an assist in the Yellowjackets 7-0 thrashing of Concordia. Eli Etzel (Crown) was named the Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded an astounding 12 saves in Crown’s win over Bethel.

Emily Goeppinger (Northwestern) was named the Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. She scored on her only shot of the night in the Northwestern Eagles loss to Carthage. Defensively the UMAC named Samantha Dewey (Northwestern) as the Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. She recorded four saves for the Eagles in their loss to Carthage.
